Description

Beef & Turkey Harvest is a nutritionally complete recipe made with whole foods only (no synthetic supplements).

Who is this recipe for? Active, adult dogs.

How should I serve this recipe? This recipe was formulated to account for any nutrient loss during the cooking process, which means this recipe may be served raw (except where noted below: salmon, oysters, and sweet potato) or the entire recipe may be gently cooked in a slow cooker or on the stovetop.

How many days of food does this recipe make? The amount of food your dog needs depends on the caloric density of the diet. They’re all different! We’ll walk you through exactly how to calculate this in our Beef & Turkey Harvest ebook.

Instructions

For gently cooked meals:

Preparing the ingredients:

  1. Wash all fruits & vegetables.
  2. Remove any skin, stems, or seeds from the fruits & vegetables prior to weighing (except where noted above: apple with skin – no seeds).
  3. Accurately measure all food ingredients in their raw state using your kitchen scale.
    • 7 large eggs (out of the shell) will yield about 350mg.
    • Using the provided scoop in NOW Organic Kelp Powder, 4 scoops is equivalent to 0.36g.
  4. Ground any nuts, seeds, grains, and produce in a food processor. If preferred, you may also add all of the meat to the food processor to finely ground your dog’s food.
  5. If you do not have a food processor, finely chop any nuts, seeds, grains, and produce used in this recipe.
  6. Mix thoroughly so all ingredients are evenly distributed.
  7. Practice safe food handling techniques, including washing your hands before and after handling raw meat. After cutting raw meats, wash all surfaces with hot, soapy water.

Gently cooking the ingredients:

Stovetop:

  1. You may add a small amount of filtered water to the pot to prevent burning or choose to not use any liquid.
  2. Warm the pot on the lowest heat setting.
  3. Add all food ingredients and cover the pot.
  4. Keep the pot covered until desired doneness to prevent nutrient losses beyond what is accounted for in this recipe.
  5. Once you’ve reached desired doneness, don’t forget to add any leftover cooking liquid to the food.

Slow Cooker:

  1. Add all food ingredients to the slow cooker without water.
  2. Set the slow cooker to low heat.
  3. Cover the pot.
  4. Keep the pot covered until desired doneness to prevent nutrient losses beyond what is accounted for in this recipe. Cooking time may vary based on ingredients.
  5. Once you’ve reached desired doneness, don’t forget to add any leftover cooking liquid to the food.

Serving the food:

  1. If you prepared a large batch of food, measure your dog’s mealtime portion using your kitchen scale.

Storing the food:

  1. Divide the mixture into daily portions using your kitchen scale.
  2. Store in airtight containers.
  3. Keep portions for the next 3 days in the refrigerator.
  4. Freeze the remaining portions for up to one month.
  5. When serving from frozen, thaw food in the refrigerator overnight.

For raw meals:

Cooking the necessary ingredients:

  1. Grab the salmon, oysters, and sweet potato. These ingredients need to be cooked even if you’re serving this recipe raw.
    • Canned oysters that are boiled and packed in water (not smoked or in sauce) are fine as is. Otherwise, oysters must be cooked.
  2. Since ingredients should be accurately measured in the state listed on the recipe (raw or gently cooked), measure the salmon, oysters (if raw), and sweet potato in their raw state using your kitchen scale. Add a bit extra to account for any change in weight after the cooking process.
  3. If preferred, you may add all of the food to the food processor to finely ground your dog’s food.
  4. Cook the salmon, oysters (if raw), and sweet potato using one of the following methods.

Stovetop:

  1. You may add a small amount of filtered water to the pot to prevent burning or choose to not use any liquid.
  2. Warm the pot on the lowest heat setting.
  3. Add the necessary ingredients and cover the pot.
  4. Keep the pot covered until desired doneness to prevent nutrient losses beyond what is accounted for in this recipe.
  5. Once you’ve reached desired doneness, don’t forget to add any leftover cooking liquid to the food.

Slow Cooker:

  1. Add the necessary ingredients to the slow cooker without water.

Preparing the ingredients:

  1. While the salmon, oysters (if raw), and sweet potato are cooking, wash all fruits & vegetables.
Mix thoroughly so all ingredients are evenly distributed.
  6. Practice safe food handling techniques, including washing your hands before and after handling raw meat. After cutting raw meats, wash all surfaces with hot, soapy water.

Combining the food:

  1. Once the salmon, oysters (if raw), and sweet potato have reached desired doneness, remeasure the ingredients in their cooked state using your kitchen scale.
  2. Since ingredients should be accurately measured in the state listed on the recipe (raw or gently cooked), the measurements of your cooked salmon, oysters, and sweet potato should match the recipe.
  3. Combine the cooked salmon, oysters, and sweet potato with your raw mix.
  4. Mix thoroughly so all ingredients are evenly distributed.

Notes

  • Using liver from conventionally raised beef will result in much higher copper levels in the recipe. This recipe calls for grass-fed beef liver.
  • Pasture-raised eggs are preferred, but not necessary to complete this recipe.
  • Eggshell powder may be purchased or made at home using farm fresh eggs only.
