INTRODUCTION

Your puppy is not a small adult dog. This is one of the most important principles in veterinary nutrition, and it has real consequences for how we feed, supplement, and evaluate diets during their first year of life. Puppies are growing at a rate that will never occur again. Some large breed dogs will multiply their birth weight by 70 to 100 times before they reach adulthood.

The nutritional demands of that growth are fundamentally different from those of a dog in maintenance. Getting them wrong carries consequences that range from delayed development to irreversible skeletal damage. The most important principles of puppy nutrition are: what nutrients puppies need more of, where the risks lie, what the science says about brain development and bone health, and how breed size changes everything.


Calories By Age

Puppies have significantly higher energy requirements than adult dogs of the same size because they are simultaneously powering normal activity and fueling growth.  The resting energy requirement (RER) for a puppy is calculated the same way as for an adult by using the formula: RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75, but the life stage multiplier applied on top of that RER is substantially higher.


This is a starting point, not a rigid rule. Your puppy’s actual energy needs vary with growth rate, breed, activity level, and individual metabolism.

Body condition scoring, which is assessed at every veterinary visit, is the most reliable way to determine whether your puppy is receiving the right amount of calories. A puppy in ideal body condition should have ribs that are easily felt but not visually prominent, a visible waist when viewed from above, and an abdominal tuck when viewed from the side.

Growth charts can also be valuable tools to help determine if a puppy is growing as it should. These should be used with a grain of salt. Maintaining a healthy body condition should be the primary determinant of if your puppy is at an ideal weight during growth.

A NOTE ON OVERFEEDING

More calories do not mean faster, healthier growth. Excess energy intake in puppies, particularly in large and giant breeds, is one of the primary risk factors for developmental orthopedic disease. Faster growth is not better growth. The goal is a lean, steady trajectory. Not maximum size as quickly as possible.


KEY NUTRIENTS

Protein: The Building Block of a Growing Body

Puppies require more dietary protein than adult dogs, both to fuel rapid tissue growth and to support the development of organs, immune function, and lean body mass. AAFCO recommends a minimum crude protein of 22.5% on a dry matter basis for growth, compared to 18% for adult maintenance. The nutrient guidelines set forth by AAFCO are minimum nutrient requirements to facilitate growth. Most well-formulated puppy diets will exceed the AAFCO minimum.

Quality matters as much as quantity. Protein quality refers to the amino acid profile of the protein source and how well it is digested and absorbed. Animal-based proteins, such as chicken, beef, eggs, and fish, generally provide a more complete and bioavailable amino acid profile than plant-based proteins. Puppies have specific requirements for essential amino acids, including arginine, which is critical for urea cycle function and ammonia detoxification, and is particularly important in young, rapidly growing animals. Two amino acids deserve special attention in puppies:

Taurine

While dogs can synthesize taurine from methionine and cysteine, certain breeds and individuals may have limited synthetic capacity, particularly when dietary precursors are marginal. Taurine is found preformed in animal muscle meat.

Lysine

Often the first limiting amino acid in plant-heavy diets. Adequate lysine is critical for collagen synthesis and therefore directly relevant to skeletal and connective tissue development.


Calcium and Phosphorus: The Most Consequential Nutrients in a Puppy’s Diet

Of all the nutritional mistakes that can be made with a growing puppy, errors in calcium and phosphorus are among the most consequential and the hardest to reverse. Bone development is a dynamic process that requires not just adequate calcium and phosphorus, but the right ratio between them delivered within a specific concentration range. Both deficiency and excess carry serious risks.

The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio in a growing puppy’s diet should fall between approximately 1.1:1 and 1.4:1.


Phosphorus in excess of calcium can trigger secondary hyperparathyroidism, in which the parathyroid gland compensates for perceived calcium deficiency by drawing calcium out of bone even when total calcium intake is adequate. This can lead to pathological fractures, abnormal bone remodeling, and pain.


The inverse problem, calcium in excess of phosphorus, creates its own skeletal problems by interfering with phosphorus absorption and disrupting the hormonal regulation of bone metabolism.

Large and giant breed puppies (adult weight over 25 kg) are uniquely vulnerable to calcium-related developmental orthopedic disease (DOD). This category of conditions includes:

  • Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD)
  • Hypertrophic osteodystrophy (HOD)
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Panosteitis


While genetics play a significant role in susceptibility, nutrition is a major modifiable risk factor (particularly calcium intake and growth rate). The critical difference with large breed puppies is that their calcium absorption is not regulated the same way as in adult dogs.

  • Adult dogs absorb calcium in proportion to need: When they have enough, they stop absorbing more.
  • Young puppies absorb calcium passively: They absorb it whether they need it or not.


This means that dietary calcium excess is directly deposited, and the skeletal consequences of overfeeding calcium during this window are real and documented.

NEVER SUPPLEMENT CALCIUM

Never supplement calcium in a puppy on a balanced diet. This is one of the most common and most damaging nutritional mistakes made by well-intentioned pet parents. If your puppy is eating a diet formulated and balanced for growth, adding extra calcium in any form (bone meal, eggshell powder, or calcium tablets) pushes intake into territory that can cause irreversible skeletal damage. More is not more. It is harm.

For homemade puppy diets, calcium supplementation is typically required, but only in the precise amount determined by a veterinary nutritionist who has balanced the recipe. The level must be calculated to account for the specific ingredients and their natural phosphorus content.


DHA: Building the Brain and Eyes

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid that is essential for the development of the central nervous system and the retina. During the last trimester of gestation and the first months of postnatal life, DHA is actively concentrated in the brain and retinal tissue at rates that far exceed later life. The puppy’s developing brain is literally being built from the DHA available in the diet.

Research published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science demonstrated that beagle puppies supplemented with DHA-enhanced diets from weaning showed significantly better performance in learning tasks, visual contrast discrimination, and psychomotor tests compared to control puppies. The effect was measurable and consistent.


Other studies have shown that maternal DHA supplementation during gestation and lactation improves retinal function in puppies and that the benefit of post-weaning supplementation is additive. Providing DHA after weaning still matters even if maternal exposure was not optimal.

DHA is found preformed in marine sources: fish, fish oil, and marine algae. Plant sources of omega-3 (ALA from flaxseed, chia, hemp) provide a precursor that dogs convert to DHA at a very limited rate: estimated at under 15% under optimal conditions.


For puppies, during a window of neurodevelopment that cannot be recaptured, a direct dietary source of DHA is meaningfully superior to relying on precursor conversion.


CHOOSING A DIET

Nearly every diet type has pre-made puppy food available. If feeding a commercial diet, the AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement on the label is the most important sentence on the package. For puppies, look for one of two statements:


  • “Formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for growth.” — This means the food meets AAFCO’s published minimums for growing dogs.
  • “Formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages.” — This statement is held to growth standards, making it appropriate for puppies. However, for large and giant breed puppies, not all ‘all life stages’ foods are appropriate. Look additionally for language specifically addressing large breed growth.


For large and giant breed puppies specifically: Look for foods formulated for large breed puppies or large breed growth. These will typically have calcium controlled to the lower end of the acceptable range (0.8–1.2% DM) and will be formulated to support a slower, more controlled growth rate. Avoid adult large breed foods and generic puppy foods not specifically designed for large breeds during this critical window.


How long a puppy should be fed a growth diet depends entirely on expected adult size. Transitioning too early can deprive a still-growing puppy of the nutrients they need. Transitioning too late is less consequential but unnecessary once adult size is reached. When in doubt, consult your veterinary nutritionist based on your individual dog’s growth curve.

Raw Diets

Data from the DogRisk Research Group at the University of Helsinki suggests real potential immune development benefits from early raw feeding in healthy puppies:

In a study of 2,236 dogs, the DogRisk Research Group at the University of Helsinki found that if a puppy’s mother ate raw food during pregnancy, or if the puppy’s first solid food between one and two months of age was raw, there was a statistically significant decreased likelihood that the dog would develop environmental allergies as an adult. 


The inverse was also true: puppies whose mothers ate kibble, or whose first food was kibble, had a statistically significant increased chance of developing environmental allergies.

A second DogRisk study of 7,015 dogs examined the relationship between early diet and inflammatory bowel disease. The odds ratio for developing IBD in dogs fed raw during the early postnatal period (1-2 months of age) was 0.541, meaning raw-fed puppies were nearly half as likely to develop IBD compared to the reference group. Raw feeding during the late postnatal period (2-6 months) showed an odds ratio of 0.622. 


Kibble feeding during those same periods was associated with odds ratios of 1.847 and 1.608 respectively, a statistically significant increase in IBD risk.

These are observational findings, not controlled trials. They come with the limitations inherent in survey-based research, but the pattern is consistent and the sample sizes are substantial. They deserve serious consideration rather than dismissal. Most importantly, it provides a starting point for ongoing research.

At the same time, very young puppies have immature immune systems and raw feeding is not appropriate for every patient. Clinical guidance should be individualized based on the puppy’s health status, the household composition, and the quality and safety infrastructure of the specific commercial raw product being considered.


Homemade Diets

Feeding a homemade diet to a growing puppy is possible and for some dogs it is the right choice. The margin for error is narrower than it is for adult dogs, and the consequences of nutritional imbalances are more immediate and sometimes irreversible. Puppies should not be fed with the mindset of “balance over time.” Every nutrient, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, DHA, vitamin D, and more, must be present in the right amount and the right ratio at every meal.

If you choose to feed your puppy a homemade diet, a recipe formulated by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist (DACVN) or a nutritionist with equivalent training is not optional. It is the minimum standard of care. Generic recipes from the internet are not appropriate. Online recipe generators and AI-based balancing tools are not appropriate. A puppy’s skeletal development happens once, and cannot be corrected after the fact. Follow-up nutrient adequacy checks, including bloodwork for key micronutrient markers, are recommended every few months for puppies on homemade diets.
