BENEFITS

Beef liver is a rich source of minerals and vitamins, and can be incorporated into a complete and balanced diet to meet many essential nutrient needs in one fell swoop. In fact, fresh food diets that don’t use liver will almost certainly require added supplements to ensure nutritional adequacy. However, liver from other species is equally nutrient-dense, and often contains less copper, the limiting factor in the amount of beef liver that your dog can enjoy. Try chicken, turkey, or pork liver for the same benefits of iron, choline, and B vitamins, but with lower copper levels.

FREQUENCY

Given its high copper and vitamin A concentration, limit to 1-3 times per week if feeding as a topper. If there is already liver in your dog’s diet or your dog’s food contains a synthetic copper supplement, adding more liver may risk exceeding copper intake.


HOW TO SERVE

  1. Choose grass-fed beef liver whenever possible.
    • Sourcing organs from grass-fed, grass-finished, and pasture-raised sources whenever possible will reduce exposure to glyphosate, a common pesticide, and ensure highest quality end result due to animals living better, healthier lives.
    • Grass-fed beef liver is usually much lower in copper than conventionally raised beef liver.
  2. Beef liver can be served several ways depending on your dog’s preference:
    • Simmer the beef liver in a pan over low-medium heat until it starts to brown.
    • Drain liver and place in an oven or dehydrator on 165° F for 6-12 hours, depending on your oven/dehydrator
  3. Serve as a healthy treat, directly on your dog’s food as a meal topper, or part of your dog’s homemade diet.
